The FIELD EPIDEMIOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAM -FETP FRONTLINE

FETP-Frontline is a 3-month, on-the-job, competency-based training, to strengthen epidemiological capacity at the district or local level of the health system. Trainees learn and develop epidemiologic skills, focusing on detection of and response to diseases and events of public health importance. The training consists of classroom trainings (25%) and mentored practical field projects (75%). Trainees spend up to 12 days in 3 workshops and the remaining 8–10 weeks back at their jobs, where they conduct field projects to practice, implement and reinforce what they have learned.

The course targets public health professionals working in the area of surveillance at district and local level including: Medical officers, Clinical officers, Nursing officers, Infection control and prevention officers, Surveillance officers, Environmental health officers and Veterinary health officers.

Through FETP-Frontline, Ministry of Health intends to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Increased appreciation among public health workers for the role of data for monitoring the health of the community and for providing timely, accurate information for decision-making.
  2. Improved basic surveillance; data collection, analysis, interpretation, and communication.
  3. Improved quality and use of surveillance data for disease and outbreak detection.
  4. Improved sharing and dissemination of health information.
  5. Improved capacity to respond to public health events of importance.
