Uganda Advances Efforts Toward Cholera Elimination: UNIPH Hosts a Dialogue to Consolidate the Gains

As Uganda continues to advance its commitment to eliminating cholera by 2030, in line with the Global roadmap for cholera elimination by 2030, As part of these national efforts, the Uganda National Institute of Public Health (UNIPH) hosted an important engagement on 14 November 2025, featuring presentations from national public health leaders.

Dr. Godfrey Bwire, Assistant Commissioner – Public Health Preparedness and Response at the Ministry of Health, led the discussion by providing a comprehensive update on Uganda’s progress toward cholera elimination. He highlighted the country’s priority hotspots, reviewed ongoing interventions, and emphasized the need for strong multisectoral collaborations in surveillance, rapid response capacity, laboratory support, and intersectoral coordination, case management, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). Dr. Bwire also underscored the value of Oral Cholera Vaccines as part of integrated control strategies.

In addition, Dr. Bonny Kintu, Senior Medical Officer – Public Health Preparedness and Response at the Ministry of Health. Presented a summary of the updated National Cholera Technical Guidelines 2025, offering detailed insights into the updated operational guidelines that will guide cholera prevention, preparedness, detection, and response leading to Cholera elimination within the Country by the year 2030.
The presentation outlined updated protocols for surveillance and reporting, laboratory testing, case management, water and sanitation interventions, community engagement, and coordination between national and local health authorities. His presentation helped participants appreciate the practical steps required for uniform implementation of cholera control measures nationwide.

The Director UNIPH Dr. Alex Riolexus Ario emphasized the need to communicate this information about cholera to the public in ways that they understand such that they are fully aware in the effort to combat this monster.
The session, attended in person by all UNIPH Fellows and staff, provided a valuable platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and alignment around national priorities. It reinforced the importance of evidence-based strategies and strengthened the commitment of public health professionals to supporting Uganda’s cholera elimination agenda.
This engagement marks another significant milestone in Uganda’s ongoing efforts to protect communities and build a resilient, cholera-free future.
