International Infection Prevention Week, observed every 3rd week of October, highlights the critical role of infection prevention in safeguarding health.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a significant concern, affecting millions worldwide each year, with 23,000 deaths reported annually. Poor hygiene practices, inadequate cleaning and overcrowding contribute to the infections impacting both patients and health workers.

In high-income countries 7 out of 100 patients have developed HAIs during their hospital stay, while this stay increases to 15 out of 100 in low and middle-income countries with 10% of those affected dying as a result.

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that 70% of infections can be prevented through proper hand hygiene and other simple, cost-effective measures.

Strengthening hygiene practices in healthcare settings is essential to reducing the risk of HAIs and ensuring safe patient care.
