Paul Edward Okello

Hello! Paul Edward Okello is currently an Epidemiologist and the Uganda Country Coordinator for the Data Impact Program with Uganda National Institute of Public Health since November 2020. Prior to that he worked with Joint Clinical Research Centre (Uganda, www.jcrc.org.ug) as a Program Coordinator for HIV drug resistance testing, and also for HIV regency testing surveillance program from Feb 2018 to Oct 2020.
Paul trained as an epidemiologist with the Advanced Field Epidemiology Fellowship program of the Uganda Public Health Fellowship Program, 2016-2018. He holds MSc Medical Microbiology from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK, 1996-7), BSc Hons Applied Biology from De Montfort University (UK, 1993-96), and a Certificate in Project Planning and Management from Makerere Institute of Business and Management (Kampala, 2012).
He attained Secondary education in Kenya between 1987 and 1990 and Primary education in Uganda between 1979 and 1985. Paul worked as Head of Microbiology Laboratory at Joint Clinical Research Centre (www.jcrc.org.ug) from 2007 June to 2015 December. In that capacity he was an active participant in the execution of microbiology components of a number of clinical trials for novel ARV drugs.
He also helped lead the clinic team in the diagnosis of opportunistic infections associated with HIV/AIDS at the research hospital. Paul also worked in various laboratories and research establishments before working at JCRC. He worked with Med Biotech Laboratories (Uganda) where he supported a malaria research team in the molecular biology laboratory between 2000 and 2002 and contributed to evidence gathering for chloroquine fansidar resistance in Uganda.
