The Uganda Public Health Fellowship Program – Laboratory Leadership Program (Uganda PHFP-LLP) which is one of the six tracks of Uganda Public Health Fellowship Program (Uganda PHFP) housed in the Uganda National Institute of Public Health (UNIPH) at the Ministry of Health, is a 2-year training-through-service program in laboratory leadership, aimed at developing skilled and knowledgeable laboratory leaders to effectively and efficiently respond to human, animal and environmental public health challenges in the country.
The program is based on the Global Laboratory Leadership Program (GLLP) curriculum whose components include didactics, mentorships, project implementation and community of practice. The competency domains include Laboratory systems and infrastructure, Laboratory-based disease surveillance and outbreak investigation, Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Recovery, Bio-safety and Bio-security, Laboratory leadership, Policy and strategic planning, Communication, Laboratory Quality Management Systems, and Research. The fellows prove competency by completing a portfolio of projects in each of these domains.
Uganda PHFP-LLP is supported by US CDC, Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Uganda (Baylor Uganda) and Association for Public Health Laboratories (APHL).
On January 26, 2024, PHFP-LLP was privileged to host Dr. Amy Boore, Program Director, Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP), US CDC and Ms. Ashley King, Public health advisor, US CDC. The visitors toured the Uganda PHFP-LLP office that included US CDC office, Program Coordinator’s office, Boardroom, administration office, and fellows’ work stations.
The visitors appreciated the layout of the work space, fellows’ products including articles, projects and also guided that, the program, to showcase all its achievements since its inception through publications as this will attract additional support from various partners and stakeholders.
