The event began in 1985 as a week-long awareness campaign by the American Cancer Society, in partnership with Imperial Chemical Industries. It eventually extended to a month-long event.
In 1992, the pink ribbon also came into play. Since then, each year, individuals, businesses, and communities come together to show their support for the many people affected by breast cancer.
To prevent breast cancer, early detection can lead to effective treatment and a positive prognosis. About 90% of patients survive for many years after diagnosis when breast cancer is detected at the early stages. Regular self-breast examination and regular mammograms are also key to early detection.
Presenting yourself early for treatment can result in more effective treatment, leading to a reduction in pain and suffering and a significant decrease in the loss of life. This year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month theme is ‘Thrive 365’.
