On 22nd May, is World Preeclampsia Day and its commemoration is intended to raise awareness about this severe and dangerous pregnancy complication, to facilitate its timely detection and management.
Preeclampsia is dangerous and potentially fatal pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure.
It usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in a woman whose blood pressure had been normal, and may not cause any symptoms in early stages.
Timely diagnosis and treatment improves outcomes for both the mother and unborn child.
This can be achieved by attending antenatal care clinics early during the pregnancy and undergoing regular blood pressure checkups by a health professional.
